DESTINATION: MUNICH
I’ll say it: I like German food. Sauerkraut, sausage, and pretzels are comfort foods in my book. However, these are just a tiny part of the diverse cuisine that Germany has to offer. In 2024, the country ranked sixth globally for having the most 3-star Michelin restaurants, behind France, Japan, Spain, Italy, and the United States.
This summer, we dined not once but twice at the Michelin-recommended Pfistermühle. The enchanting ivy-covered restaurant sits along a picturesque cobblestone street. Housed in Munich's oldest mill building, the storied structure dates from 1573. Diners delight not only in the charm and beauty of Bavaria but also in the fabulous hospitality and food.
We happen to be in Munich this summer at the very end of Spargelzeit (asparagus season). And just as apples mark the start of autumn in the States, asparagus epitomizes spring and early summer in Germany. Especially the revered white stalks that are harvested from April to June.
The German obsession with white asparagus cannot be overstated. There is a palpable thrill in the air when asparagus stands pop up in every village. So, of course, the sweet spears featured heavily on the menu. Each dish was an explosion of flavor, from fragrant soup and tiny tips topped with citrus cream to white asparagus paired with strawberries.
A cold bottle of Müller-Thurgau Fürst wine (a first for me) was the perfect pairing. Bright florals with green herbal notes and lots of minerality offered an elegant yet light creamy palate. IN THE KNOW: While the menu changes with the seasons, the kitchen always freshly interprets Bavarian dishes, focusing on locally sourced foods and wines. A prix-fixe menu and à la carte offer delicious German staples and vegetarian options in the heart of the city. LOCATION: Less than a five-minute walk from Marienplatz (the main square since 1158), the Residenz (the seat of government and the residence of the Bavarian dukes, electors, and kings from 1508 to 1918), and the Bavarian State Opera.
